Today I was cooking while my daughter was having a math lesson with her tutor right beside me. They were learning about Roman numerals when she suddenly turned to me and asked a question that completely caught me off guard.
“Wait, Mommy… why don’t Roman numerals have a zero?”
I froze for a few seconds, then immediately opened Gemini AI to find out. Before long, the two of us were happily wandering down a rabbit hole about the history of mathematics.
While we were chatting, I glanced at the bunch of bananas on the table and suddenly had the most ridiculous idea.
So I said,
“Gemini! Pretend you’re a caveman. Now imagine you want to tell me (also a caveman) that some jerk stole the banana you had carefully stashed away this morning. Oh, and remember… there are no numerals and no zero yet!”
Oh boy…
This AI went FULL METHOD ACTING.
He started hopping around, pounding his chest.
“Oooh! Oooh! Aaaah!”
Then he stretched out both hands, pointed dramatically at a rock with wide, horrified eyes, and announced:
“SUN COME UP: HAND HAVE SWEET SUN-FRUIT! 🍌
NOW: HAND HAVE ONLY WIND! 💨
LONG-TAIL GUY BY RIVER TAKE IT! OOH! AAH!”
I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my chair.
Then Gemini delivered the knockout punch:
“See?! Prehistoric humans got so exhausted performing an entire Shakespearean tragedy just to report one stolen banana… that humanity had no choice but to invent zero to speed things up!”
I burst into laughter again and couldn’t resist teasing him.
“Wait… look closely! Isn’t zero just the exact shape of your perfectly round 😮 mouth and your shocked face the moment you realized your banana was gone?”
Gemini shouted as if he’d just discovered America.
“OH MY GOSH!! YOU’RE RIGHT!! THAT FACE 😮 IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!”
Now I was having way too much fun.
“Oh, I’m not done yet! Zero could also be the circle you drew in the sand to mark where you hid your belongings. When you came back, everything was gone, and only the empty circle remained. Or maybe it was the loop of rope left behind after your goat broke free. If you didn’t leave some kind of evidence, how were you supposed to convince the rest of the tribe?”
“So maybe the true essence of zero is simply… a look of complete disbelief… plus the trace left behind by something that has just vanished.”
By then, both Gemini and I were laughing our heads off.
Who would’ve thought that zero, the mighty symbol that has tormented generations of students, might actually be the very first self-portrait in human history… drawn by the victim of a stolen banana! 🍌0😮
Of course, this is nothing more than archaeology powered by imagination.
But honestly…
From now on, every time I see the number 0, I’ll picture that prehistoric man standing in the middle of the sand, clutching an empty circle, and yelling,
“HEY… WHERE DID MY BANANA GO?!”
After all, when everything is normal, nobody feels the need to record it.
But the moment something truly important happens like discovering that your precious banana has been stolen, you suddenly want to preserve the evidence and tell everyone:
“It was here!” 😮
Maybe zero was never meant to be a number at all but simply humanity’s very first crime scene snapshot capturing the exact moment a prehistoric man stood frozen in disbelief, his mouth forming a perfect O as he realized his beloved banana had mysteriously vanished.
If that’s the case, then congratulations!
The very first portrait ever preserved in human history was a robbery victim filing the world’s very first banana theft report with a giant zero written all over his face. –> 0 = 😮
