Story – Dusty ocean breath

By

Sometimes a story just wants to be told, even if it doesn’t fit into a tidy category. This is a short, one-minute mythic fairy tale I wrote for fun, a little story about stars, ocean depths, and celestial light. If you have just one quiet minute to spare today, I hope this gentle legend brings a moment of light to your day.

Long ago, long before the earth knew the sound of human feet, dead stars rained down from the heavens in brilliant trails of fire. Returning from their long journeys through the deep cosmos, they whispered to the sky of a land so beautiful, wild, and green that even the celestial realm paused to listen.

Moved by their song, God permitted Angel to wander this pristine world. She descended to earth accompanied by her vast, luminescent Guardians, beings of pure resonance and unshakeable devotion who wore armor forged from starlight and carried spears of golden aura.

Together, they made a home in a quiet, sun-drenched valley filled with sunflowers, blooming lavender, and clear, singing streams. There, the Mother Angel birthed babies from pure celestial light and the divine blessings of God within her. The Guardians did not touch her once, for that was not how children of the sky were made. Instead, the Guardians stood in a silent, reverent ring around her, pouring their energy and unconditional love toward her so her light remained whole as she brought new life into the world.

For a long time, they lived in perfect, effortless harmony.

As the children grew, a natural curiosity awoke within them. They began to wander further from the valley, stepping beyond the golden light of their Mother’s garden and into the deep, untamed forests of the earth.

There, in the shadowy lands, the children encountered darkness for the very first time. But the darkness did not attack them. It yielded. Wherever the children walked, the shadows shrank back, bowing low like humble servants before a warmth they had never known.

Inside the children, a new feeling bloomed, a quiet, heavy swell of self-awareness. They looked at the shivering shadows and heard a soft, sincere pledge: “We need you. Please stay. We have never known what light is.”

The children, born of pure heavenly grace, believed this heartfelt plea. Desiring to warm the cold earth just as their Mother had warmed them, they stayed. They wrapped their arms around the darkness, pouring out their radiance to comfort it.

Back in the valley, the Mother Angel felt a cold tremor pass through her core. Her Guardians instantly raised their wings to shield her, trying to pour their energy back into her heart. But the energy could not settle. The Mother Angel had divided so much of her celestial self to create her babies, and without them gathering around her each day to unite their light, her physical form began to fade.

She was scattering into light dust.

Knowing the energy of the Guardians alone could not save her, the First Guardian made a quiet, solemn choice. He gathered the fading Mother Angel into his arms and bore her high back into the heavens before her spirit dissolved entirely.

The Second Guardian removed his armor and laid down his celestial spear in the tall grass. Binding his wings beneath a simple traveler’s cloak, he stayed behind to find her lost children.

Suddenly, the foundation of the world shook. The sky lit up with the brightest meteor rain the earth had ever seen. Millions of falling stars swept through the atmosphere, chanting a celestial song with pure, ringing voices: “Come back, light babies! Your Mother is waiting! Jump on us and return to where you belong!”

Hearing the call, the children dropped the burdens they carried and leaped onto the passing stars, riding the trails of fire back up to the open heavens.

The darkness, terrified of being left in absolute silence, let out a desperate, abyssal cry. It reached up with thousand-fold tendrils, locking around the ankle of the eldest child. “Stay! You promised!” it whimpered, pulling with the sheer weight of a dying world.

Before the eldest child could decide whether to ascend or stay, the earth split wide open beneath her feet. The ground gave way, and she and the clinging shadow plunged straight into the open abyss.

The Second Guardian did not look up at the sky. He did not leap onto a falling star to save himself.

With a deafening roar, the Guardian dove headfirst into the rift after her. Unfurling his vast wings of golden resonance, he wrapped himself entirely around the eldest child, using his immortal body as a shield.

Down, down, down they fell, past the roots of the mountains, past the subterranean fires, straight into the freezing, sunless depths of the primordial ocean.

BOOM.

The trench sealed shut above them, plunging everything into absolute, timeless blackness.

For millions of years, they remained buried at the bottom of the sea. It was cold, dark, and timeless. To keep the child’s light from extinguishing in the freezing deep, the Guardian surrendered his own individual existence. He slowly dissolved his immortal essence into her core, wrapping her in the power of the sky and placing her into the deepest sleep the earth had ever known.

Millions of years passed in silence. Deep beneath the ocean bed, continents shifted, tectonic plates collided, and the ancient seabed was slowly thrust upward by the violent forces of the earth.

One day, a roaring noise shattered the timeless quiet.

The eldest child opened her eyes. The cold ocean was gone. The deep sea trench had been raised to the roof of the world, becoming the highest, most majestic mountain peak on earth, standing so close to the sky that she could almost touch the clouds.

She looked for the Guardian, but he was no more. His form was gone, yet his strength beat steadily inside her chest. For the first time in creation, a child of the angels remained forever on earth, carrying within a single soul the pure light of her Mother, the vast shield of the Guardian, and the deep, grounded weight of the primordial shadow.

On that high peak, the child carried on the mission of her Mother. When she brought her own babies into the world, they were not like the fragile beings of pure light born in the golden valley.

Her babies carried the entire merged energy of her journey. Some were born with more of the shadow’s deep intuition, some with the pure radiance of the sky, and some with the steady, protective strength of the Guardian. She could not choose how they were born; she simply loved them all unconditionally.

Because her children carried the Guardian’s shield and the shadow’s resilience within their very blood, they did not need to gather around her every evening just to survive. They were strong enough to endure on their own. They left her mountain, wandering across the vast continents, building their own lives, and charting their own paths.

High above, God and the Angel looked down from the sky. They knew they had lost their First Guardian and their eldest child to the earth forever. So, in their silent grace, they cast a timeless blessing from the heavens over every single creature on the land.

And down below, as those wandering children of light, shadow, and shield walked through the world, the blessing rested quietly upon them, waiting for whichever ones were ready to feel it, while asking nothing at all from those born entirely of the dark.
